Is it normal for a 9 speed cassette to weigh almost a lb, or do I just have a heavy one?
Same wheel, and brake rotor..

3.15 lb.

2.12lb.

also Tire Pressures, i was running around 40psi, but i've been told by more than one person the lower the better.. Whats a good pressure for a 200lb guy to run without the risk of snake bites?

Its just an inexpensive cassette, nothing wrong with it.. More you pay, the lighter it will get..

that's what i figured, just wondering, seemed really heavy compared to the front..

The more expensive ones will also last longer. I personally love my XTR rear. I opted for the 12-34T one so i can have a bit more bottom end for climbing. They're not all that expensive and normally easy to find on eBay. Just make sure whatever you get is compatible with your shifters and derailleur.

as far as tire pressure, are you running tubeless or tubes? with tubes i run as little as i can without pinch flatting and then i add a little more. tubeless i run enough pressure to keep from pinching the tire. 26" wheels require a little more pressure as do rigid bikes. i run 29" tubeless wheels at 30lbs on my (now deceased) hardtail and i tip the scales at 175.

cassettes are heavy but i could never spend money on xtr.

Eric: i had thought so, it looks in great shape, just suprised by the weight..

nate just must feel shunted because i bought the stumpjumper rather than his haro..

Damn so maybe me running 40psi wasn't too high?
makes me really think i should upgrade tires..
I just seem to slip and spin on the loose stuff, on up hills.

40 psi is probably too high. run them at 30 to 35 psi depending on where your riding and weather conditions.

shit, i run mine at 50-55. rock and roll!

I've always liked the feel of them better at a higher pressure, just not too fond of the " bounce", i guess.
I'm going to try going lower, and get some extra tubes. lol

What size tires are you running? You can usually get away with running high-volume tires at a lower pressure without pinch-flatting. Riding style has a lot to do with it too; since I stopped slamming into so many obstacles on the trails and started "flowing" more, I've had no pinch flats, and I'm running around 29 psi. I'm 165 geared up, and am running 2.3" tires.

Firstly, I have 26x2.1.
I used to run 30 psi when i first started about 6 months ago, and kept getting flats. (before i even knew snake bites existed) So i jumped up 10 psi to prevent them.
Now I'm beginning to wonder if it's making a difference. I'm going to try 35 psi.
The obstacles are too fun to skip, i'll get better tires and keep running 40 instead of skipping those. lol

you can run lower pressure on the small block 8s. I run 30-35 respectively on mine. Loves it.

I've heard so many good things about them.
I'm thinking of just saving my money and going for them.
they're expensive though..

It's taken me about 2 months to find out what pressure suits me best. Small Block 8s I found 30-35 psi works for me.

would i be able to run one on the rear until i get another for the front?
or would that screw me up?
