The bike light I was speaking of is the MagicShine. You can get from geomangear.com or DX. The price is $85, this is a steal deal. DX is in Hong Kong and shipping normally takes 2 weeks. The flashlight you saw is from DX. Flashlight (MTE P7 SSC) is about $40, then another $20 for batterys (18650 li-ion) and a charger.

i'm debating buying this or building one with the same p7 led,

the only thing i've read from the DIY people is that this lil guy should be taken apart and reassembled with a resonable amount of thermal paste...

looks good for the price thats for sure

Old news Mark, Geoman and others like Deal Extreme have been working with the manufacture on quality control. The Magicshine costs $95; it's the steal deal of the century. Most of my lights are $250 or more. My battery is over $100. A 16.8V@4.25AH poly Li-ion type. A smart charger (required for li-ion) is $30. So, I already have $130 invested and no light yet. I think I would need 2 of them if I was going to buy Magicshines. Plus you have to buy the helmet mount extra. So I'd still be just over $200 with a helmet mount and two lights.

ah good to hear on the quality control,

was wondering about how they compared to better stuff... then again vs my 6v 12w halogen it's gota be awesome haha

Bleh...don't remind me...

That link does have some interesting lights...900 lumens? Ouch! .... the square one looks kinda familiar and it' nice & compact but $200 is a little steep.

I read that my 10w TrailRat 2.0 Halogen puts out about 300 lumens which is only 1/3 of the ones shown...but good enough. I'm just not sure if I believe that a 10w halogen can throw out that much light.

I also think the MagicShine is a hell of a deal. That was the 1st MS I've seen. It worked well, had a nice color, and had GOOD throw. Geoman has spare batteries and chargers for it also.

Pardon my not knowing a damn thing about night lighting. I'm considering one for the handlebar & one for the helmet. That'd be around $235 or so. Would this be the best/decent deal for the money or should I consider other single lights in that price range?

You are best off with one bad ass helmet light vs two ok lights 1 for each... Keep in mind when go go into corners your handlebars are pointing in the trees and your head is looking down the trail. If you buy cheap lights you will outrun them as well.. Meaning you will travel faster than your beam and it will shorten the distance of the trail that is lit up..

If Joe is using one and he is not out running his light, I don't think that I am going to have to worry about it.

Team Sponsor Us Joe, rides a 20lbs Specialized full suspension, drives a Black Honda Pilot, Fast. You know who Joe is. Bottom line, he is faster than me and if he is not out running his light, I wouldn't have a problem.

Asian Joe! Its a Honda Element. I've met him a few different times. I agree with you about him not outrunning the light it must be good. Unfortunately, his hand/eye coordination is probably much better than mine. Just b/c I see it doesn't mean I can react to it! HAHA!

I rode with Joe the other night and was VERY impressed with the brightness of his light. It is by far the best value out there right now. I ordered one for my girlfriend the other day. The only thing I'm concerned with is the longevity of a light that bright/inexpensive. Really if you get a season or two out of it, you got your money's worth. There'll be something brighter and less expensive then anyways (kinda like computers). Two of those Magicshine lights should be a good bit brighter than my 1 helmet light thats 900 lumen and cost he $330 w/ battery

Joe is like Chuck Norris...he doesn't need a light because he is faster than the speed of light. :)

I have had great night rides with pops older lights from last season.
Killer. I was getting speeds like in the day time. I know there are many faster than little old I, but with the hi dollar helment light you dont really need a handlebar light. It would be an advantage but not necessary with the "mad scientists" light bar that is on the way.

looking at the pics for helmet mounted lights, they all look tall. does anyone have a problem clearing some of the lower hanging branches/trees on certain parts of the trail?

Anyone have any experience with Cree Q5 LED? There's some on eBay for about $15 per torch.....they claim 200 lumens per bulb (thinking two plus my 10w halogen would do the trick).

I can't be sure without looking at it, but that's probably just for the emitter and not everything you need to make the light function. When I looked at building my own, I would have to buy the emitters, optics (for directing the light), the control board, the switch, and either fabricate or buy a housing. By the time you do all that, the savings over the Night lightning that I bought was negligible and easily justified when comparing their experience building lights vs mine.

this was a ready to go torch (flashlight)... it just used the cree q5 LED which they claim was 200 to 250 lumen... here's the light: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270476176443&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I wouldnt think 3 AAA batteries would have enough uuumph to create 250 lumens. Theres one with a bicycle mount for 19.99 from the same seller.

Well all your talk about the Magic Shine convinced me to give it a try. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I just couldnt see myself spending $500+ on a new light no matter how bright. Magic Shine fit better into my budget and with all the rave reviews on here I feel better taking a chance on an $85 light.

MagicShine has Seoul P7 emitter. You can buy a HP flashlight with P7's or MCE's. The trick is the 18650 batteries. High capacity, light weight these are what we waited so long for.

I know Cree was the leading LED maker for the sign industry the last 4 years.. 90% of all the manufactuers were using Cree LEDs to make their raceway systems.. Other thing you could do is have Pops put a 12v in your halogen and run a 14.9v Lithium battery and its Screaming bright.. He did that with a 6v halogen for me and its wide and brighter than most the leds..

No doubt, one of my first night rides was with a bar light only, I almost killed myself.
At least 3 maybe 4 full trips into the woods at top speed. Now that I have the POPs Superlight for a few rides, I dont know how I could do it with less. Kinda like riding around with a supernova on my helmet. By the way pops, Mark has my light @ TS, Have you picked it up yet? I will need it when I come home so I can pack it with my bikes before I ship them over here. Let me know. Marty
