View Full Version : did the trail hold up
after all the rain yesterday?
every thing looked okay IMO except Descent. The ledges of the Gorge are a little more pronounced now too...but in a good way.

I rode at four o'clock and the trails were nice. I only did the half loop because my knee is still sore. The bridges/sandbags on treehuger were well placed and posed no problems. However, there were about four horses getting ready to go on the trail right after I started and the trails were pretty soft as you can imagine.

The sand at the bottom of the gorge's two descents are starting to be a hazard if you're trying to go too fast. I'd like to see if we can do something about that.

I started my ride yesterday on the N Pate section (Crossword, Hangman, etc.). I don't know the trail name, but the trail that hangs a right, right before the claypits, and goes around the pits and then straight across a little intersection into some fun downhills. The second little drop where there is carpet on the trail was eroded pretty badly yesterday. The rest of the trail was fine.

The guys(idiots) that built that carpet drop should be shot. We may just need to let it errode down to hard clay or jut scrub that drop and make a new one.

Would laying down a bunch of sandbags help??

hehe. Good call. Its such a shame as the next steep drop on that trail is awesome. That big drop was in fine shape yesterday.
Do we as a group actively work on those trails? Or are they off limits?

I don't know. I'm thinking a more proactive method. Like tucking some waterbars close to the drop offs. Meaning immediately after the drop off, where you normally would be bunny hopping over and wouldn't land on anyways, put some water bars and get that water off the trail.
I think by doing so the water bars would be hidden AND would halt any further erosion by getting the water off the trail early on the descents. If we could do that THEN we could probably make a berm similar to the one Rob built at the fun section on Chute. I think it'd make going uphill on those sections easier too because it'd put a bit of an up-turn going up into the erroded drop offs.
Understand the picture I'm trying to convey? I know it's hard to explain but I think it'd work well. I made a jpg of what I'm thinking. The bars wouldn't even need to be as pronounced as I'm proposing because the water isn't going to be going down that fast. Not like it will carry momentum or even have an opportunity to if we do enough of the suckers.

Do we as a group actively work on those trails? Or are they off limits?we worked on parts of the loop as a group...but the twister section so far has just been a handful of ppl working on their own...we will hopefully have a day in the next few weeks as a 'group'...the focus won't be twister but we could send a few folks over depending on the turnout.

Nate, the Sunday 2:00 ride took a few casualties from your 1st drop on twister. I think the soft soil was the culprit more so than the washed out part. The list of casualties incuded Mark, James, and two other riders. Near death experiences by Brennan and myself.

thats not good at all, i too have busted there and i still am hurting. guess we need to scrub that drop. there is just too much soft soil there.
Maybe scott can get out there and put up some police tape to keep people from going down it and hurting themselves.

Makes a little more sense now that I know you're talking about the Gorge. For some reason, I thought you were talking about the roll in on the Twister and was having a hard time following you. I'm not a master trailbuilder, but it seems like you would want the turds (waterbars) to be closer to the edge of the stairs (drop-offs). That way the water has somewhere to go. If we do what I think you are describing, wouldn't the water just continue down the trail since the washed out part of the drop-offs are "U" shaped w/ the open end of the "U" pointed downhill?

dave were you talking about the carpet drop where the peeps got hurt or the cut back drop in at the beginning of the trail?

Carpet drop. No one got hurt, just folks goin over the bars all over the place. It's just the turn as your rolling in. Your front wheel has a tendancy to dig into the soft soil right as your momentum is taking you down, so over the bars you go. If you were to back the turn up so that you're just going straight into the roll in, it would probably take care of the problem.

I proposed the turds to be inserted close to the drop so the water would hit the turd and then wash off to the side immediately instead of gaining any momentum forward. Yes I guess the turds could be put farther towards the end of the drop off ledges but my thoughts were keeping the turds back far enough where they wouldn't be eroded by bikers hitting it or casing the tops.
From now on waterbars will be refered to as "turds".
I always miss the good wrecks!! and laughs hopefully.
I am going to work on that carpet drop asap*. I was going to do it this past weekend but got tied up on the chute with repairs. I don't if anyone wants to help or take the lead, if not I am happy, and look forward to, creating a nice smooth roll-in and berm right there.
Something easily rolled by everyone, but with the berm at the bottom advanced riders can rip down the roll-in and carve the berm for fun, plus keeping speed up.
asap*- this means activity could occur between now and who knows when. It may not be, or could be, tomorrow. It could be in a week, or three days

I have a giant roll of cAUtion tape from my long ago role as a sign contractor... It's great for marking giant holes that people might fall in =) ... I'll put in the car and pass it along... (I'll be out there wednesday night at 5 or so)
As my front tire dug in, I thot "I need to beat Nate & Sean". Then the impact slammed my mouth closed and I thot " No, not over the bars again!". With all these ppl watching! I spit out sand for the next 30 minutes. I think we just need a larger piece of carpet and it needs to be staked well. Straightening the turn-in will work wonders also.
