I have been asked many times about the whole singlespeed thing. Here is a good article that answers some of those questions. And a cool new idea to lose the tensioners on a conversion. You know I can be the man for used chains.http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech/2006/probikes/?id=decker_giant

Many thanks for that link! I've been toying with idea of taking my old '96 GT and converting it over to ss. My derailleurs are at the end of their life and I was thinking it would be a good frame and bike to toy around with as a single.

32t-16t Anyone of those is a great place to start, its what you can handle.
34t-17t If you find it to easy step up 2 teeth up front or one in back until
36t-18t you find a gear you can live with on the climbs and on the flats.
