i rode part of scenic this morning. left from my house down by the country club and went through downtown, out scenic climbing gabberone, langley, and creighton to spanish then came back home via davis/mlk/bayfront/blah blah blah.... anyway, based on the MyTracks app on my phone it says the elevation gain for that route was 1,399 feet.
wow that's almost 1400 feet.

Your bikes a foot of the ground, you gained a foot getting on it. 1400!!!!

Thats killer, how far did you end up going?
Up in McDavid/Bratt (North Escambia Co.) by my parents my dad & I did 32 miles with right at 1,400ft. I was wondering how Scenic Hwy compared. I was asked to make a 50 mile route and I am hoping to be closer to 1,800-2,000ft. Regardless, it'll be something different than the big city of pensacola.

i am currently trying to put together a route that goes out to coon hill cemetery and back via scenic. i don't know what the total elevation gain would be, but the distance should probably end up around 90-100 miles. planning on scouting it out on saturday morning.

well, i never made it to the cemetery yesterday due to roads made of sand. it was kind of a bummer, but still a pretty fun adventure.
i did end up with 79.3 miles and 3,558 feet of elevation gain.
just a note for anyone who uses google maps to find new routes - if the road is white on the satellite, chances are it's sand.
the lines are misleading. we ended up on horse trails. where is coon hill cemetery?

coon hill cemetery is in jay, north of quintette road. it is supposedly one of the most haunted places in florida. i assumed this would be a fun destination to ride to, eat a sandwich and then head back into town.
i will probably try to find another route out there, but i don't have much experience with that area so i don't know which roads are good to ride and which aren't. i had considered driving it first, but that takes all of the fun out of it, in my opinion.

I take it you went up through Pace to get there. There might be a few back roads but even I'm still not sure exactly how to get there. It's been on several tv shows about being haunted... I think it'd be a cool night ride!

yeah, i looked at a couple different ways on google maps all going through pace and trying to come back through the farm hill/cantonment area, but cutting across on quintette is increadibly stressful and probably not at all safe. i was trying to make it a loop instead of an out-and-back, but it seems like a loop is going to be difficult.
i think it'd make an awesome night ride. it is reported that no one can walk the perimeter wall of the cemetery without being pushed off by some unseen force. that could make for some fun half-time activities for a night ride.

Sounds like a good ride. Best roads into jay; 87 has big shoulder all the way, 89 has big shoulder most of the way, 29 has shoulder all the way(big traffic), Chumuckla hwy has no shoulder. Hwy 4 east to west has great shoulder and roller after roller.

I hope to have my LHT in one piece this week and I'll be ready for it!

Thought I'd dig up this old thread. Joe D and I did a road ride down Scenic today. We got 587' of elevation gain over 21 miles

Seems a little low to me. I usually end up with just under 500' of elevation gain in 16 miles on a games loop plus red loop at the U.

You're out of the closet now Dave. I can't believe Joe hasn't got you out for a Saturday Blackwater ride. Good one coming up this Saturday.

I'm planning on doing a long road ride this weekend, for sure. I'd like to make the BW ride but Red Snapper season opens back up Saturday, so I may be fishing. It will mostly depend upon the marine forecast for the weekend and which day looks best for the water. I would like to do the Fenner Wantz ride in a few weeks then a 42 mile race in Pisgah, NC in Nov, so prob need to start putting in some longer rides. The Pisgah race sounds brutal. My friend Ryan says he had some buddies do the same course and said to expect a 6-7 hr ride. You wouldn't expect a course that only lets you avg 6-7 mph to be flat.

Red Snapper opens Friday, Oct. 1st.
If weather cooperates we're heading out Friday for some fishing and diving.
Saturday's ride in Milton should be a good one.
