A few of us are planning to ride and camp out at Oak Mountain the weekend of May 3rd (not this weekend but next). If you can join us please do. I'm gonna head up that Friday with the family, set up camp before dark, and we'll head back sometime Sunday. At least a few of the guys are bringing the wife/ girlfriend so if they camp bring them with you.

If you haven't been to OM before it's one of the best places around to ride and is family friendly with lakes and a petting zoo for the kids. I'll probably bring some kayaks so they family stays entertained while we ride and I'm pretty sure they rent out canoes. Even if you can't stay a night come down on Saturday for a group ride. If we have enough riders we'll get in touch with BUMP (the mnt bike club in Birmingham) and see if they want to join us for a ride as well.

Post back if you can make it!

Melanie and I are more than likely "in". Greg and Ryan have to logistical stuff to work through with bringing the fams, but they are probably going to make it too.

I was mistaken, Leslie's vacation starts on May 10th, not the 3rd... If we can make it, we woudn't be able to leave out of here till 3pm on Saturday, doesn't seem like it will happen this time either for us :( ... I have to talk to Leslie's people but I *may* be able to get away alone... 37¼% chance...

We're confirmed. Ryan & family, Greg & family, and Melanie & I will be there. I'll probably leave work early on Friday and head up to OM to get there by 4ish, set up camp, and get in a quick loop before dark. We plan on being there until 12 or 1 on Sunday. We might even get in a loop at Swayback on the way home.

what type of accomodations will you be using? tents, campers, cardboard boxes?

superdave
04-22-2008, 09:26 PM
Tents. We are going to try to reserve an RV spot so we have electricity, but if they're sold out then we'll just get a regular campsite

what site numbers do you have so we can reserve ours close to it?

superdave
04-23-2008, 02:29 PM
They don't assign a campsite until you check in. Kinda like a hotel. She said that the best way to guarantee that we are close to one another is to get there at the same time.

NoName2

nate, are you taking an rv or pop-up? if you're taking a tent should we just share the two campsites? my guess is they only allow 4 people to a site so it may be a gamble. if you get a third site we can leave our cars there and set up on only two of them. just a thought.

anybody riding today? me & noland will be out there at 5:15.

the wife is starting to become less than enthuastic about the camping trip this weekend. she has never slept in a tent before. so im not sure if we are gonna make it. maybe i should throw up a tent in the back yard tonight and make her sleep in it to break her in.

Dude!?! What about the "ring of power"? Get her an air mattress and tell her it's like a hotel with really thin walls. If nothing else, come up w/ Carl for Sat.

ditto what dave said. get an air mattress ($30) and she will be fine. she won't know if she can handle it unless she goes for the first time. tell her the other ladies are gonna be disappointed if she doesn't go. start putting the pressure on! :)

If anybody has access to free firewood, it would be well advised to bring it to Oak Mountain for this weekend...just a thought

I have some that we can bring. We may need to bring a little more especially if we are going to have more than one fire.

I plan on hitting swayback sunday on the way home then stopping in Montgomery after for the best BBQ ever. Dont know if the wife will ride swayback but it only takes less than 1hr to complete it so she is cool with stopping there. anyone else riding sway?

I was thinking of doing the same thing. I think it will depend on how we feel energy-wise after two or three laps at OM. But if the legs feel good, then I'm all for it.

I'm gonna do a day trip on Sat. I was thinking of leaving P'cola at 0700. I may decide to stay Sat nite there in Pelham.

Barring unforeseen wackiness (happens more than I like) we will be leaving Sat afternoon. What is the actual drive time from the Papermill/Molino? and by drivetime, I mean sane drive-time, not machado drive-time. =)

Well, right now the weather looks pretty sketchy on Sat. morning. 70-80% chance of rain until noon then back down to 50%. I think we are still going to go, we just may not be able to ride until the afternoon. Pictionary?

You're probably looking at about 3:15 - 3:30 hrs. from your house.

just read the "yahoo" weather and it has 50% chance for friday and saturday. if it's correct thats much better than the 70% to 80% chance. i say we just head up and see how it goes. at worse we'll all be sleeping in the cargo van. :)

i used to be a weatherman and am gonna guess the we'll get some light rain but nothing significant. the last time i said that it rained like hell though.:endo:

nate & dave, what time are ya'll headed out? 12:00 ish? are ya'll caravaning? it's probably best if we just meet ya'll up there as with the wife and kid i don't know what time we will be leaving. gonna try for around the 12:00 time frame though if we can pull darcy out of school. hoo niedce an edumacation aniweys?

It still kinda depends. I want to put in at least 2 laps at OM since I don't make it up there that much. We may try to sneak one in on Friday and one Sat afternoon or two on Saturday if we get a break in the weather or a night ride. Otherwise, it may just be one on Sat and one on Sun then head home. Even then, we still may be able to slip in a quick ride on the way back.
