I just completed my 2nd ride at the u on the brand new Kenda Nevegals 2.1s and have decided that I hate them. What tires are you currently running and how are they in the sand? I have had two tires that are great in the sand (Specialized Resolution/Adrenaline and Hutchinson Spyders) and two that were pretty lousy in the sand (Panaracer Fire XC & Nevegals)

i run irc mythos ii and they work well but i'm on a 29er. i ran hutchison pythons on my santa cruz and they worked well also.

I run the Mythos XCs as well and I like them. I'm not tubeless though.

Unfortunately, IRC and Hutchinson are both on Stan's list of Not Recommended tires. Just looking at the tread pattern, I think I would like the Mythos.

i run mine tubeless on stans rims and it's great. i ran them tubeless on non tubeless bontrager rims with mixed results. it might be worth trying if you can find some tires used. i can give you a full explanation if i see you this evening.

I ran Mytho on Bonty non-tubeless rims sucessfully for a long time. The side walls are thin so at first the Stan's sealant was coming through in lines where the casings were joined on the side but sealed up in 10 minutes or so and did well for many months. When it goes, however, it goes and you have to do a ton of cleaning to get them to re-seat.

I like Maxxis Igniter quite a lot don't even think about them when I ride. To me that is the hallmark of a good item. It disappears and does its job. Now these are 29 tires, but same treads etc.

Looking at the Kenda Small Block 8s. Anyone tried them? Similar tread pattern as the Navagals, but smaller, lower blocks that will probably not "bite" so much in the sand. I'll probably keep the Nevegal on the back.

I've noticed a difference between a 1.95" tyre and a 2.1" in loose terrain so if it's possible for you to go up to a 2.25" I'd try that. I stay away from tyres designed for hard pack cause the knobs just aren't deep enough to get down to the harder stuff under the sand.

I think just joe runs the small blocks.

If it's just joe then how can you say you've seen multiple people out there riding on them?

*wah wah wah waaaaaaahhh*

I've run Geax Sedona 2.0's in the sand and really didn't like them that much. Decided to go cheap for the next set, and am currently running some $8.00 Cheng Shin chicopees (2.1); don't like them either. I've got a set of Hutchinson Barracuda 2.3's on the way though, and am looking forward to trying them out.

I actually posted a similar thread on mtbr.com and had a few suggestions that, after researching, look to be good choices:
Geax Saguaro
Kenda Small Block 8
Swhwalbe Racing Ralph
WTB Mutanoraptor
All of their company websites mention that they excel in loose soil/sand in the descriptions of the tire.

Which size Nevegal did u try? I have a Nevegal 1.95 which I think is the best front tire for UWF, good grip, good in sand and not to slow.
I have been racing the 1.95 small block for a couple of years, fastest Kenda tire with good grip but not a good front tire for UWF, it is great for the rear.
If you would like to try some other Kenda tires this is what I have in stock and you are welcome to give them a try for yourself.
Nevegal 1.95
Karma 2.0
Small block 1.95
Short tracker 1.90 great rear tire...fast

Just let me know

small blocks- I have no problem with the fronts or rears. I've been running the 2.1s since I bought the Rita. It originally came with IRC Exiwolves, I dropped almost 200 grams a tire when I switched.

They are 2.1s. I ordered a SB8 2.1s today for the front. We'll see.

Any ideas on how a rider's weight would affect the way a tire performs?

If you're FAT you'll need more PSI to keep the tire from flattening out. the FATTER and lower PSI your setup is the more rolling resistance you're going to have.

oh i get it, kinda like if you have a big head... except we would be talking about wind resistance as opposed to rolling resistance:D

I can't take all the credit - I had to borrow the pic from your favorite person's image hosting. As far as figuring out who is me...I'm the ugly one (not that the hint makes the job any easier) :D

I just cancelled my order of the SB8 and had Cycle Sports order the Captain S-works tire. The tread is pretty close to the Resolution tire that I liked and may be actually a little better for loose terrain according to Specialized's chart.

Let me know what you think of them. I want to get a 2.25" front. I can't get any wider in the back though.

Dave are you going to sell the tires you weren't happy with?

Dave are you going to sell the tires you weren't happy with?

Sure. I only bought one Captain tire to put on the front to see if I'm going to like it. So I only have one available right now. If I like the new tire, I'll replace the back tire too. I paid $30 ea. for them plus shipping and they have 3 rides on them. I'll sell them for $20/tire. Here's where I got them:

Oh yea, and they are 2.1 Dual Tread Compound

Do you think they would be better than the Veloraptors 2.1s I'm running now?
They seem to work good when its wet but not so good in the dry sand.

I'm not familiar w/ WTB tires at UWF. Why are they not good in the sand? Is the front end sliding out or biting too much? Is is a problem with the rear end sliding or biting too much? If you want to take them for a spin, let me know and we'll throw them on your rim and you can judge for yourself.

I front wheel seems to be coming out from underneath of me when its real dry. The back seems to be OK. There a matching set but different tread patterns. Consider your tires sold, when you decide to get rid of them.

Dave. Did you ever make a decision on your tires? I'm in need of buying two sets for my two bikes and want something that works well at UWF.

Alright, I know I'm not Dave.... but I've been using Hutchinson Barracuda Airlights on my bike, and like them enough that I'm probably going to get several sets to put on the mtb club bikes. $20 each at pricepoint right now, but only in the 2.3 size. I like fat tires though, so 2.3 is all good. :D

I read the Captain S-works have thin sidewalls causing rips a lot in them. So i wanted to know how his turned out.

Been running small block 8s for about a month, have had no problems at all.. Ran them at OM, the U, and Swayback.. One think to keep in mind is play with tire pressure.. Of course I didnt have any problems with the Specialized Pro tires I was running before, again it was all in the tire pressure adjustment for me..
