Saturday May 17th at 10:00 am
Sunday May 18th at 2:00 pm

It's that time again. The trails are starting to get over grown with eye poppers and we need a good trail maintenance to cut them back. In order to do the job right we need as many volunteers as possible and would like to see all members and non members alike join us. Don't start thinking of reasons you can't make it. If your ride out at the U, and you wouldn't be on this forum if you didn't, you should set this time aside and put in your hours for the cause. Without these days the trails would no longer be ridable. Please do not just leave it up to the rest of us as it would be unfair. Now that I have guilted you enough join us both/ either Saturday the 17th at 10:00 am or Sunday the 18th at 2:00 pm. Saturday we will be cutting back as much as possible and Sunday we will be cutting back what we couldn't get to on Saturday and also working on water-bars, gutted sections, removing loose sand, etc...

We need your support so please post back that you are going to be there and what day(s). If you truly cannot make it because of work or another reason go out there solo and work on a trail. Even if we just put two or three hours into each day the trails will be vastly improved. Below is the list of trails and who has volunteered for them. If your name is not yet on the list and want to help adopt a trail throughout the year let me know and we can add you to it. For the Saturday & Sunday maintenance talked about above will not be working on our individual adopted trails but will be working as a large group to knock them out as quickly as possible. Tools to bring include loppers & shovels. Be forewarned that if we see you riding that day and not helping you will be beat to a pulp by those working. Families are also encouraged to help with the maintenance (and beating). :D

You may put my real name on there, Micah. I'm planning on working on CokeCan this weekend instead of next since I have a Mensa meeting next saturday in Navarre. We have a PORC meeting at TJ this coming Tuesday right?

The games loop needs a good bit of work, Ed B can account for that. I plan on putting some time in on it this weekend for sure. Seth is in san diego until late august, so we remove him from the adopt a trail. Can i step down from the bone trail? I would rather help scott with the the games side as 3-4miles over there is a good bit of work just for Scott, AND i am not sure if robbie and david are helping over there.

i'll make the changes but for the weekend in mention we may want to only concentrate on the "main loop". if we send people over to the Hangman Loop we will never get to the end of the other side. we're gonna have allot to cover in two days. i'll be happy to help on the Hangman trails on another weekend as a side project. i may be able to do it this saturday if ya'll are out there.

was it us that was way too loud or others around us? i'm afraid that any restaurant would probably be the same. i know montereys, casa ole, etc... are louder than that. any thoughts?

scott, how to we handle the funds for TM items like sand bags? does a member get approval, buy them, and then are reimbursed by the treasurer?

Especially the ones with the oranges.

As for sandbags, if Nate can give us an estimate on the price beforehand I think we could do that and just paypal the $$ to him or apply it toward his next year's membership :D

Ugh.. Yellow? Can't get the sand colored ones as to not stick out as much? If you get sandbags I think I could use a few on CokeCan this weekend. If you can't get them soon enough i'll just go buy what I need locally.

Paypal is no good really for money transfers. takes 3-4 days to get your money AND they take a percentage out. I'd personally, if I was going to buy something for the club, not use paypal and just get my money at the next meeting. Don't want to put money into paypal's pocket if I can help it.

i can probably be out both saturday and sunday (17th & 18th) for trail maintenance. although it will be earlier in the morning.

i, however, will not be at the meeting on tuesday since it is such a pain to try and get all the way out there after work.

the less i have to drive, the better. unless i'm driving somewhere to go ride bikes....

Don't want to put money into paypal's pocket if I can help it.Getting cash out the PORC coffers is a major undertaking and considering the time and cost of fuel paypal is a good method for smaller amounts (<$100)....besides, we would just pad the amount sent to make up for the small paypal fee so the purchaser would not be out any $$.

Hey, family is always first bro, take care of everything and have a safe trip.

PS- Where do we meet on Sat and what should I bring?

My condolences to your family Paul.

I figured we would meet at the Pate Rd. trailhead at 10 on Sat. We'll probably do a real quick tutorial on how the trails need to be cut and figure out who is working on what then disperse from there. I'm planning on taking my truck up the powerlines and parking at the beginning of Cambodia to tackle that, so I can take a truckload of peeps up with me to work on either Bone, Gorge, backside of Treehugger, or Cambodia. If I need to, I can even take a group over to work on the Bayou trail area since it's pretty bad too if no one else has a truck. As you can see, I'm planning on having a ton of people show up for this TM day.:D Oh yeah, and bring anything and everything you may have laying around that can cut limbs, branches, etc. I think we just want to focus on trimming back the trails on Sat. We'll see how much we get done Sat before we decide what we're going to focus on Sunday. I'll have a cordless hedge trimmer w/ 2 batteries, a pair of trimming sheers, 2 machetes, and a pair of leverage trimming sheers for the larger diameter stuff. I may also bring a flat shovel to scoop some of the loose sand in that corner at the beginning of Cambodia. I'll also have 2 medium sized coolers for folks to store their drinks and lunch.

Since I have to work all weekend and cant make the BIG TM days, I worked on the powerlines between greenbriar/chute and Bone/Cambodia. Its nice and wide now. I spent about 2.5 hours(I didnt relize how bad bone/Cambodia was). The only thing I forgot was the rake but it still looks pretty good.

I'm borrowing a battery hedge trimmer as well but I think you're right carl. It's less messy if you're more methodical cause you can make one cut and take out multiple smaller limbs.

Well, Cambodia is a 4 lane highway until just past the fallen tree. It should be super fast. We might be able to finish it up tomorrow. By my count, we had 9 people show up for the trail maintenance. I hope we have atleast that many show up tomorrow or else the trimming won't get finished. It sure would be nice if we had as many people show up for tomorrow's TM that show up for the 2:00 Sunday rides. How far did everyone else get? Big thanks to Galen and Eric for helping me out today and to everyone else who showed up. I'm going to go take a nap now.

I got there kind of late and took my friend Daniel and our machetes through Pate and Tree hugger. We ended up clearing Treehugger to the the powerlines. The machetes didn't do the best on stuff high in the air, so there may need to be some lopping done. Altogether, we got six hours

Awesome Carl. That's a commendable effort. I think I was good for about 8 hrs for the weekend. Nate and I finished Cambodia north of the jeep trail then Melanie and I hit it south of the jeep trail and almost got to the end of the thick stuff. I'm going to charge the batteries in the hedge trimmer and go clean the last little bit out sometime this week. Thanks to everyone who put time in on the trails this weekend. Now periodic maintenance should be a lot easier. I think we need one more day with 6 or so people to finish the Crist Fall/Bayou trail area and the Games loop. Tuesday evening's ride is going to a lot faster and a got less painful.

"Topiary is the art of creating sculptures using clipped trees, shrubs and sub-shrubs. The word derives from the Latin word for an ornamental landscape gardener, topiarius, creator of topia or "places", a Greek word that Romans applied also to fictive indoor landscapes executed in fresco. No doubt the use of a Greek word betokens the art's origins in the Hellenistic world that was influenced by Persia, for neither Classical Greece nor Republican Rome developed any sophisticated tradition of artful pleasure grounds. How far down did you get Brett? I finished the Bone on Sunday morning. Then I went riding. Sure was nice where we had chopped and hewn. I'm still not sure that cutting back isn't counter-productive. Seems like the Yopan and briers now get more sun and grow even faster.

i got to about where the camel humps are/were. then i walked back to the car as i had some "family" type stuff scheduled for the afternoon. i think micah wrapped the rest of the trail up on sunday so the only thing that needs addressing is the water erosion on the transition we cut. i'm not sure if we'll be able to get to it this memorial day weekend as i've heard micah will have his hands full on the beach.

i have to say for the most part thing look pretty good out there.....for now. I think dave has the right idea with the electric hedge trimmers. they seem to work great in those areas where there is a massive clumping of small yaupon (see cambodia trail).

On that note Nate, I had a couple of ideas for future maintenance:

1. I think we should use some club money to buy a few of the hedge trimmers Dave had and some extra batteries.

2. We could get a good system going if we had 3-4 man crews moving through a trail - Hedger 1st getting the bushy mess, Lopper 2nd getting the larger cuts, Cleaner 3rd pulling and clearing up the trimmings.

3. Put a sign up at the trail head (attached to our map sign) hopefully 2 weeks in advance to hopefully get more help from peeps who don't frequent our site and to just let people know we will be out there working on a particular weekend so they are more cautious. (This was Eric's idea)

I was thinking we could use the old Uncle Sam "We want you" pic and put the dates on it and use that as a sign, or the WWII era graphic of the chick mechanic flexing her bicep.

all good ideas we will implement at the next TM event.

dave, what kind of trimmer did you bring out and how much was it? did it do a good job and should we go with electric or gas powered?

I honestly don't think it's worth the money to sink PORC funds into. I bet there's somewhere in town we could rent a gas powered one once a month and it wouldn't cost as much as buying one would PLUS we wouldn't have to fix it when it malfunctions. You have to think about TCO not just initial purchase.

Black and Decker Hedgehog 22" 18V rechargable. They are about $85 anywhere you look and Lowe's has a 2 pack of extra batteries for $40 right now. One battery works about 20 minutes on a full charge. You can get a decent gas powered hedge trimmer for $150 (B&D, Craftsman, Weedeater). I know the UWF mtn bike club had one and everyone that I talked to complained about the weight, but I picked one up a Lowe's (of course w/o gas) right next to the same one I have and they are pretty comparable in weight. The rechargeable one works okay on the lighter stuff, maybe up to 1/4" or 5/8" thick but gets hung up on anything thicker than that. It was pretty helpful to use it for an initial trim, then go over the same area with the clippers to get the larger stuff, then use it again for a final clearing. I think a gas powered would work better, but will be more difficult to upkeep.
