View Full Version : Do hydraulic disc brakes normally...
...make a clicking sound everytime they engage? My 1st set of hydraulic and didn't know if this was normal...or if something was coming loose.

I've owned three sets of hydros now (Avid and Formula) and none of them clicked.

If your levers are separates I'd get a pair of BB7s. I had a pair of magura Claras on my F700SX originally and since they leaked regularly it put a bad taste in my mouth for hydros. I bought the Avids from Dave at a super super good price and have loved them ever since.
Hydros are just so darn expensive but Dave will tell you once you get them adjusted and bled properly you should never have to fool with them ever again. I on the other hand as stated had a bad experience with my first set and don't care to give them a try again anytime soon.
i like the performance but the clicking makes me uneasy....and it is only the front that makes the noice...they work great aside from that.
:ha:
too bad that's not standard equipment on all mountain bikes.

Scott, What brand are they? I squeezed the lever a few times on Greg's brakes (Magura Marta SL's) and they clicked a little. The click was really more of a feel thing than audible though.
They are Shimano...it is certainly audible. Pops took a listen yesterday and indicated to me (if I understood his technical lingo correctly) that they need to work through a break-in period.

I have owned Hope Minis and Avid Juicys and Elixirs. None of them have clicked.
Can you tell if the clicking is coming from the lever or caliper? If its the caliper, I would check to make sure the rotor and caliper bolts are snugged down well. Also see if the pads are moving in any direction that they shouldn't. If its the lever, its may just be some play in the internal piston which I wouldn't see as a problem unless fluid is leaking by or braking power is changing. Oh yeah and check the tension of your spokes. I once had a loose spoke that would make a pinging noise every time the brakes were engaged. Just a few different ideas.

I have a set of XTR hydros and just put in new brake pads. No clicking with fresh pads. The H-spring might be out of alignment and hitting the rotor. Clicking is metal on metal. That shouldn't happen if everything is set up right. I did notice that when I replaced the pads on my XTR brakes that the front pads had bits of rock imbeded in it from Ocala. Not sure if it is granite or limestone, but it was causing it to squeakl badly on the front. New pads=silence.
Not sure if your ShimaNo brakes have the bolt going through the body and pads to hold them in. I know my XTR brakes do. If that bolt was loose, it cold cause a clicking noise when the pads engage.
Also, I highly doubt Pops let you off that easy with that short of an explanation! LOL. I am sure the quantom physics of organic brake pads and the magnetic fields they produce with dissimilar brake rotors were discussed at least for a while before you got that answer! LOL...just kidding James. Speaking of which, I need your Telsla coil at the house here James. The wife won't let me get a new LCD TV till my old 37" dinosaur Tube TV bites the dust. I figure if I get your tesla coil within ten feet of it, it should do the trick nicely! The TV is too big to cram in the microwave to kill it!
