View Full Version : Racing at OM
Today, I got my 1st Mountain bike race fix(this year). OM is the bomb, and I feel very sad for all you losers who didn't make it to the XIV running of the Bump & Grind. P'cola had a nice turnout, even though some were spectating. Me? Well I was JRA and a damn tree stepped out into the path. I took this as sign of evil intent. I crashed into it intending to teach this tree(and all it's Buds) a lesson. Damn I hit the ground hard. Rang my chimes good. I really wasn't able to giterdone. This cost me some serious time. The good part was, I made it out under my own power! Next time, I'll attempt to attach a little smoothness to the speed.

I was actually looking forward to the phone call from Marty ( Scratch-N-Dent ) after this race. It was his virgin race, and I was just as excited for him, as he was. I talked to our parents around 8:45 P.M., Pensacola time, and they had not heard from him either. I am hoping that things went well, and as planned for him. I agree with pops, Oak Mtn. is the bomb. It is definitely on the top of my favorite places to race, and ride. Pops, I also understand you frustration, with the trees, that don't realize that they should stay out of they trail. I hope that everyone that participated, had a great time, which is more important than anything else. If anybody that was there, has the results of the PORC contention, please post them. I am looking forward to seeing how everybody did.

I'm sure you have spoke with Marty since your post, but for those that don't know, he placed 11th in his class. I'm not sure of the number of riders in his class, but I believe he was in or near the top half. Not a bad return for a first timer.
This was my first trip to Oak Mountain and it is fastest course that I have been on so far. My max was 28 mph, but I can't imagine where I went that fast. The only real downhill that I can think of is the one after Blood Rock, and that is a hell of road to be doing 30 mph down. After reaching the bottom of that section I had to remind myself to loosen the grip on the handlebars.
For me Blood Rock was nothing. It was the half a mile of road with softball to basketball sized rocks for a road surface, and don't even think of holding a line. It's not possible. You pretty much just bounce from side to side from one rock to another.
My race time was 1:14 and some change and for that I averaged a heart rate of 172!!
Congrats to all that were able to make the trip up and finish the race in one piece.
Did anyone see Hurley?

19 guys and 1 chick in SS class. 4 DNF's I got 11th and rob c garnered a 13th, I think we were both in front of the girl? Hopefully, or I have alot more work to do before the next race.
Congrats Keith and Brendan OConnor, Brendan pulled 5th in his class. Great seeing such a strong Pensacola contingency. Go PORCers! M

Billy Hudgens 10th Expert 19-29
Joe Damaso 4th Sport 25-29
Joe Orchesky 13th Sport 25-29 (I know that is not your last name, but that is what they have listed in the results.)
Ronnie Otts 17th Sport 25-29
Keith Moore 1st Sport 35-39
Brendan OConner 5th Sport 40-44
Brenden, We need a rider in the 40+ group for Team Sponsorus. As well as you did at the B-n-G you would do great in the SCRCS. Next race is Sept. 07
We know that Pops had his own personal battle with some locals (trees). I've been in a couple of those battles and the tree has always won.
Marty, I didn't see a single speed class listed in the results, but we do know that you finished 11th in that class. So, are you hooked? Are you ready to find your next race? Biloxi? This weekend?
Great job everyone.
Now, is there anyone planning on racing in Biloxi this weekend?

Probably not this weekend, but hooked as hell. I have been fabricating some bike weights that will attach to my waterbottle cage lugs on the bike to increase weight by about 6 lbs. and then start working out with that. After july 4th I will have a road bike and I will start really training for a race at a later date.

I am gonna start with a little less that 3# to start with, and my next one will be about 3.5# and then add a larger camel back with some weight in it after I get used to the extra weight and fast as well then hopefully I will be quick power and long endurance in the race enviroment. Lighter got me better so I could handle the bike and now I need to bulk up and get some real workout time whenever I ride. Want a set of the weights? any one let me know. M

Road bike huh. Sounds like a plan. When you get that road bike remember that we have some of the best roads up north of Milton to ride. What kind of road bike are you looking at? How much are you wanting to spend.

I am talkng about a antique. you know shifters on the downtube and stuff.
I dont think I am enough to ride with the likes of you road guys.
But I am willing to try. Can we drink and smoke b4 and after?
Got my first weight added to bike and it fits perfect. Cant wait to be slow again.
What kind of bike you got to get rid of? M

I will let you know what kind of road bike he is looking at. It is an old school, and I mean OLD SCHOOL, Ross frame and fork, it has downtube shifters. The groupo is full Campy. It is a 12 speed, with the cranks being Super Campy. The cranks may be old, as is the bike, but they are hard to find, and expensive when you do. As far as how much is he wanting to spend. Well the answer is 0, I am giving him the bike. He does need to have the wheels respoked. The rims are sew-ups, but I have a set of clinchers for it. I would have done more, but felt that he might want to learn a bit from Mark. I am just trying to pass the torch to my older brother. I am glad that he has finally been bit by the cycling bug.

Ive got an old 80's Fuji Club all original in pretty decent shape. I still like to ride it occasionally but its sooo uncomfortable. I think it was a pretty good bike back in the day but I cant find alot of info on it.

I'm not trying to get rid of a bike. I was just curious. I think the old school thing is great. We get a lot of those bikes come through the shop and even though they show some age you can still see the quality in them.
Don't worry about being able to keep up with us. We will either wait, or we will plan a ride that is not as fast or long as the usual. Don't worry, it won't be because of you alone. We have such a large group of riders that ride over here that we plan scaled down rides as well. Even if we don't wait you will always have riders around you. Trust me when I say that you will not the slowest person. Plus, the scenery is usually better in the back of the group, but for some reason most of us still ride up toward the front. I have to question that sometimes.
