On Saturday, March 22nd, at 2:00 pm will be the start of the 1st ever PORC Turkey Run. You do not need to be a PORC member to participate. This event will be similar to the hash that was held at UWF last year, but geared to be more family oriented (i.e. no beer chugging, singing, name calling, etc.; not that there is anything wrong with that). For those of you who aren't familiar with a Turkey Run, here is a list of rules:

1) Everyone starts at the same time on a pre-determined course. The course will be between 8 and 9 miles. There will be enough stops/breaks so that anyone can finish or win, regardless of conditioning

2) There will be arrows on the ground at all main intersections indicating the direction of the course. If there is no arrow at a secondary intersection, just continue straight on the trail.

3) On the trail, there will be six stops along the course (indicated by a line across the trail) where there will be a hidden pad of post-it notes with numbers written on each post-it starting with the #1 then #2, then #3, etc. The post-it pad will be well hidden within a 100 ft radius of the line across the trail. Once you find it, pull the top post-it only and proceed to the next stop.

4) The hiding place for each pad will be difficult, but not impossible to find. You can expect to find the pads hidden under a log, or nailed to a tree (just out of reach, of course), or just about anywhere in between. None of the pads will be buried in the ground.

5) Feel free to take this opportunity to display a little gamesmanship. If you happen to be one of the lucky first ones to find the coveted post-it pad, you are more than welcome to keep that information to yourself, pull your post-it, and discretely hop on your bike and continue down the course. Once the other participants have discovered a rider to be missing, a frantic search should erupt retracing the missing rider’s steps

6) After the rider gets their post-it, they will proceed on the course to the next stop, and so-on until the end of the course. The winner is the rider that has the lowest total number once you add their post-its together.

7) This event will be loosely officiated and relies heavily on the honesty of the participants. Please do not pull more than one post-it or remove the post-it pad from the original hiding place. This event is a fun little competition that place more emphasis on the fun than the competition.

Because this is a PORC sponsored event, we will not be providing alcoholic beverages, as was the case with the Hash. There will be a beverage stop halfway through the course. So if you would like to enjoy a frosty cold one, be sure to bring a cooler filled with your favorite beverage and we'll transport it to the beverage stop area for you (plausible deniability, gotta love it). Gatorade and water will be provided by the club. The winner of the event will receive a bike related parting gift and 2nd & 3rd places will receive PORC t-shirts. Entry into the even is free. It would be helpful to know how many plan on attending in order to gauge the supplies needed for the event, so please post here if you plan on coming. Remember, the best way to insure that events like this continue to happen, is to participate. Please make an effort to come out a support your local mountain bike club.

Pops, Ed, Dustin, we need to get together to discuss how we can all win this. I figured with enough post-it note variety we can probably print our own as soon as we find the correct color on the trail.

Is Nate going to be racing this one?

You have an optomitrist, a single speed junkie, and an ex-army engineer...how much honesty do you really think they have left?!?

How was I to know she was only 13, she looked at least 15 to me! I figure the "variety pack" at Office Depot should have all the colors and shapes of Post-it notes. Along with a box of assorted Sharpies. All we need now is a sample of his handwritting. lol

Just a reminder: This event is next Saturday. Again, it would be helpful to know who will attend so that we can purchase sufficient supplies. So far, we have Chris D., Aaron's foot and brother. Rob C is a maybe.

Can help or participate or both.

Thanks for the offer to help. My dad and I should be able to put it together ourselves. I just need for people to show up, ride, and enjoy themselves.

I think the suprise will be on you. the easter bunny will steal all your post it notes because you called it a turkey run the day before easter. I sure hope the prize is'nt multi-colored boiled eggs.

where are we gathering to kick off the event??

We'll start at the trailhead/parking area off of Pate Rd, right where Carl's trail and Pate trail meet.

Pilotman28
03-20-2008, 08:51 AM
I will be working in the morning so won't be there... a waiver?? Don't we already ride at our own risk? Are there wood mosters or obstacles like MXC or something?

Should we/could we/I bring a grill and lawn chairs?

You gonna bring the grill. If so i can bring some "lips and assholes", buns, etc.

Could possibly find some vegitarian "lips and assholes" for Paul

And Paul is a veggie.

Ah. funny, he doesn't strike me as a weenie. I guess I'm not right everytime.

Idoeyes
03-22-2008, 08:09 AM
Yep....I'll be bringing one.

Paul can throw some veggies on it too!

Poor defenseless veggies just trying to convert CO2 to O2 for US and Paul comes along an KILLS THEM:mad:

I, on the other hand, am taking out a major producer of methane and therefore contributing to a cooler planet and fewer holes in the ozone. Some people just don't understand the implications of there poor personal decisions.:D

We had 19 folks ride in the event not including Melanie or myself. Thanks to all that participated. We all sat around after the event and enjoyed some dogs, sausage, and brats cooked up by chef Dustin (thanks to Dustin and Nate for bringing the food). I would post some of the pics, but I keep getting an "invalid post" message after the upload. Carl, I have your gift certificate. I somehow left it at the house. I'll get it to you Tuesday at the evening ride.

. I would post some of the pics, but I keep getting an "invalid post" message after the upload. Could be exceeding the post size limit...5 MB normally....We can bump it up to 50 MB to see if that helps.

BTW, enjoyed the run....thanks for putting it together. Looking forward to the next one.

it was fun. we should do a poker run next time to help out the slower riders among us.

Agreed, either that or I need to really hide the post-its better. I heard that the frontrunners beat the truck to the beverage stop and that was after the 1st three stops. If it took 10 or 15 mins per stop to find the post-its, that would go a long way toward evening things up. But you're right, if we did a poker run, how quickly you got to the stops wouldn't matter so much.

I had a blast. That was my first time of actually participating in any kind of a race, and it was a great informal way to get the feel of what racing might be like. I can tell some extra conditioning should be in order. I still can't decide whether I like my singlespeed or full suspension better. The singlespeed was making those hills kind of tough spending so much time out of the saddle.

I definitely remember the Chute being more fun when I wasn't so tired. It seemed smoother than normal and had some nice berms and jumps, but couldn't get the energy to jump every single one of them.

Dave, I think you hid those post-its pretty well, I think the one group took a wrong turn and that's what held them up a little.

03-23-2008, 01:33 PM
Dave, thanks again for all the work that went into it. The post-its were only easy to find if there were a large group of riders looking for them. I spent a good 20 min looking for the one at the chute with one other rider.

RobC
03-23-2008, 01:38 PM
Yeah speed made no difference at all for me. If I got there first, It made no difference, as by the time the post-it was found ten guys were there already. Plus on the real hard one (in the snake hole, # 4?) almost everybody was there by the time it was found.
Thanks again Dave it was really fun!
The post-it's were hid fairly well. Being tired, it was hard to concentrate on searching, if they were any harder to find I would have given up! and almost did on #4?!
Membership money well spent!!!!!
