First I would like to...

First I would like to say that I attended my first PORC Member meeting last night at Mellow Mushroom. I enjoyed seeing and speaking with all of the members in attendance.
Today I was inspired to ride at UWF. As was mentioned at last night's meeting, the weekend storms have washed a great deal of soft sand onto the trails. I rode last Friday, prior to the weather and the conditions were very nice. Today the effect of those rain storms was evident. The worst area is on the Chute Trail, from the Big Power Line easement to the Magical Magnolia Forrest where that trail reaches bottom.
Now for the eventful part of the ride: I nearly ran over a Box Turtle, I did run over a large snake (perhaps a Copperhead) & I caused a horse to spook, throwing its rider! I felt really bad for both the rider and his horse, although I did nothing wrong; I was riding on upper Cambodia near the old car in the woods. As I rounded a corner, I came into a straight-away. From the opposite direction, two equestrians approached the same straight section as they rounded a corner. There was at least 40 feet separating us, but apparently my presence startled the lead horse who reared up and tossed his rider. The horse then bolted back down the trail in the direction they had come from. I immediately stopped and headed over to the downed rider, who got up and brushed himself off. He said he was OK. His companion proceeded after the runaway horse. I offered to wait by the trailside until they could control the situation and pass by me. I waited patiently for about 10 minutes, When they did not return, I rode slowly down the trail, staying vigilant for the horses. I finally encountered them nearing the waste water treatment facility easement. I allowed them to enter the easement before I passed. I checked again with the equestrian to make sure that he and his horse were alright. He assured me that they were, and even thanked me for my concern. I felt genuinely bad for them, but it seems that "all's well that ends well". Oh, and after I returned home, I discovered a tick on my leg! It's a dangerous world......Be safe out there!
